Mounting an abrasive wheel is a skilled task, not a quick swap. A wheel that is cracked, fitted with the wrong flanges, or run above its rated speed can shatter the moment it spins up. Because the consequences are so severe, mounting should only ever be done by someone who has been trained and is competent to do it. The steps below show why each part of the process matters.
Before you start: get the basics right
Make sure the machine is isolated from its power source before you touch the wheel. Then confirm three fundamentals match: the wheel must be the correct type for the work, its bore must fit the spindle, and — most importantly — the wheel's maximum operating speed must be equal to or greater than the spindle speed of the machine. This information is printed on the wheel and on the machine. If the wheel is rated below the machine speed, do not fit it.
Step 1: Inspect the wheel
Examine the wheel closely for any visible damage — cracks, chips, or signs that it has been dropped or stored badly. Check the label is intact and legible, and on bonded discs check the expiry date, as the bonding agent degrades over time. A damaged or out-of-date wheel goes straight in the bin; it is never worth the risk.
Step 2: The ring test
For vitrified (bench-grinder type) wheels, carry out a ring test. Support the wheel loosely through its bore and tap it gently with a light non-metallic implement. A sound wheel gives a clear ringing tone; a cracked wheel gives a dull, dead thud. The wheel must be clean and dry for this test to be reliable.
The ring test only works on dry, undamaged vitrified wheels — it is not a substitute for a careful visual inspection, and it does not apply to bonded resin discs.
Step 3: Fit the correct flanges and blotters
The wheel is clamped between two flanges of equal diameter, which should be at least one-third of the wheel's diameter. Blotters (paper washers) sit between the flanges and the wheel to spread the clamping pressure evenly. Both flanges and blotters must be in good condition and the correct size. Tighten the spindle nut enough to hold the wheel firmly, but no more — overtightening can crack the wheel just as surely as a knock.

Step 4: Refit and adjust the guard
The guard is your protection if the wheel fails, so it must always be refitted and correctly adjusted. Set it so that only the working part of the wheel is exposed and the guard would contain fragments if the wheel burst. With the guard in place and everyone clear of the line of the wheel, restore power and run the machine up to full speed. Stand to one side, never directly in front of the wheel, and let it run for a short period — long enough to be confident it is balanced and sound before bringing any work to it. If the wheel vibrates badly or sounds wrong, stop immediately and investigate.
